Our Story

About Dr. Halff

The Halff story began back in 1950, when Dr. Albert H. Halff hung out a shingle in Dallas and founded the one-man consulting firm that would one day become one of the nation’s largest engineering companies. His vision: A company dedicated to improving the lives of real people in real communities.

In 1953, Dr. Halff and his partner Allen Hundley each contributed $1,000 to form “Hundley and Halff.” In 1960, Dr. Halff amicably split with Hundley, and formed “Albert H. Halff Associates” in Dallas. Under Dr. Halff’s leadership, the firm became a pioneer in hydraulics, hydrology and floodplain management, and grew to be one of the largest independently owned consulting firms in Texas.

More than seven decades later, Dr. Halff’s vision is being realized—and then some—continuing his rich legacy of serving people and communities through smarter solutions.

 

 

 

 

A Life of Service

Dr. Halff’s legacy is one of distinguished service to his profession. In 1981, he was named by the Texas Society of Professional Engineers as “Texas Engineer of the Year.” He is a Fellow and Honorary Member of the Texas Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). In 1984, was awarded the “Award of Honor,” the highest award of the ASCE Texas Section.

In 2004, Dr. Halff was awarded the School of Engineering “Hall of Leaders” award from his beloved alma mater, SMU. He holds 13 patents on engineering advances, including innovations in desalinization, water treatment, industrial waste treatment and ion exchange.

A Texas-Sized Heart

One of Dr. Halff’s hallmarks was his compassion (which forms the foundation of the values he instilled in his colleagues and the relationships he built with clients, stakeholders and citizens). He truly wanted to capture their thoughts and understand how a project would affect them personally and professionally.

On one occasion, he walked up to a home where a woman was clearing things out from a recent flood. Dr. Halff asked her if he could help. She said, “Yeah, you can wash these dishes while I clear out some of this stuff.” So that’s exactly what he did. He washed her dishes while she told him about her flooding problems.

We serve public and private sector clients in the government, corporate, development, education, energy and transportation markets. Across all these, one theme is common: People first. That is the key to our success—yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Over the past seven years, our company has doubled in size, encompassing projects across the country and internationally. We’re always striving to keep growing. To keep investing in new technologies. And to keep providing holistic solutions to the communities in which we work and live. This is today’s Halff. And tomorrow’s.
