City of San Marcos
The City of El Reno, Oklahoma, just west of Oklahoma City on Route 66, is booming with opportunities—and infrastructure needs.
El Reno has surpassed growth in the last 5 years than it did the 25 years before it. Facing unprecedented growth, the city had the foresight and vision to thoughtfully plan for dynamic development with the community in mind, also wanting to honor its Route 66 history. After meaningful discussions with El Reno city leadership, Halff’s Planning and Landscape Architecture, Local Infrastruct[ure and Funding Resources teams supported two key grant application efforts that are set to transform the historic downtown.
First, the Oklahoma Route 66 Commission awarded the city $1.2 million to renovate a historic fuel station on the “Mother Road.” This will breathe new life into the time-worn building with classic cars on display, new neon signs and photo ops with a refreshed iconic mural painted by a local artist.
As Route 66 travelers make the this turn westward from Oklahoma City, the new “Filling Station Visitor’s Center” is the first building they see. [Learn more about the Filling Station Visitor Center opening along Route 66 in El Reno.]
Next, the city teamed with Halff to win another $1.2 million for a downtown streetscapes project, awarded from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) Transportation Alternative’s grant program. This marked the first phase of reimagining Downtown El Reno as a more walkable space, making it safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, while supporting new tourism of this historic downtown.
Together, these two grant-funded projects bring fresh investment and vision to the heart of downtown El Reno’s most visited streets.
