FAMU Way Honored as Summit Award Winner by Civil + Structural Engineer

February 8, 2022

Halff Associates, Inc. (Halff), one of the nation’s leading engineering/architecture consulting firms, and the City of Tallahassee were honored with a pair of awards from Zweig Group’s Civil + Structural Engineer magazine.

In the inaugural edition of the Yearbook of Engineering Achievement Awards, the FAMU Way project earned the Transportation/Infrastructure category award and the Summit Award, which was given to the best project overall.

Criteria for award winners are “projects that significantly impact not only the communities in which they are located but also the AEC industry as a whole and our conversations about sustainability and equity. … Many of these winning projects are critical to the sustained health of their communities.”

Planning for FAMU Way began in March 2007, and Phase 3 opened to the public in April 2021. The pristine and innovative corridor creates a seamless connection between Florida State University and Florida A&M University, eases traffic congestion and connects neighborhoods to other parts of the city. It also facilitates economic opportunity, impacts social growth and provides facilities for citizens to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

Complex planning took place to combine existing infrastructure with the planned design.

FAMU Way includes four aesthetic and functional roundabouts, wide sidewalks, a multiuse trail, multiple community gathering places, a children’s playground, on-street parking, high-quality landscaping and hardscape, and much more. It’s an exceptional example of holistic design through collaboration with a diversity of stakeholders.

FAMU Way captured the Grand Award in 2021 from the ACEC Florida Engineering Excellence competition. It has also won awards for various project phases from the Big Bend Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

Halff collected 16 project awards in 2021. For a complete list of awards, visit here.
