Tallahassee, Halff Recognized with APWA Public Project of the Year Award

December 9, 2021

Halff Associates, Inc.’s (Halff), one of the nation’s leading engineering/architecture consulting firms, and the City of Tallahassee was recognized by the Florida Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) with the 2021 Public Works Project of the Year in the Environment More than $75 Million category for the Tallahassee Two Solar Farm and Substation 34 project.

In an effort to diversify the energy sources available to produce electric power and utilize renewable sources of energy for electric power generation, the City of Tallahassee pursued development of a solar farm on the southwest side of the city.

The project, completed in December 2019, consisted of the design and construction of a 42-MWac utility level solar farm on previously cleared land at the Tallahassee International Airport.

Approximately 128,856 photovoltaic solar panels are mounted on a fixed racking system, positioned to collect the maximum amount of energy from the sun. In addition to the electrical aspects, stormwater is managed on site by 10 constructed stormwater management facility and eight existing natural depressions.

Due to the sandy nature of the existing soils, water quality treatment is provided in both the constructed facility and the natural depressions. Access into and through the site is provided by gravel access roads.

The farm produces 84 million kWh annually, enough to power 9,500 homes, and makes up around 4.5% of the city’s current energy production. Annually, the facility will save 44,200 kilograms of carbon emissions each year.

Halff Associates has collected 14 project awards in 2021. For a complete list of awards, visit here.
