Highway 102 Pedestrian Tunnel

Client:

NWA Trailblazers

The Highway 102 Pedestrian Tunnel project in Bentonville, Arkansas, addressed critical pedestrian safety and connectivity needs due to sustained residential growth, increased highway traffic and rising demand for biking. Clear lighting and well-lit pathways allow users to cross Highway 102 with much more ease instead of crossing multiple lanes of traffic. It also allows for easy access to the newly built adjacent apartment complex.

Pedestrians and cyclists expressed concerns about crossing Highway 102 (14th
Street) due to increased safety risks from rising traffic volumes. According to the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT), daily traffic on Highway 102 has surged by 200% since 1990, underscoring the need for a safe pedestrian crossing.

The Trailblazers hired Halff to lead a design solution focused on creating a safe and efficient crossing under one of Bentonville’s busiest highways. Halff led the design, integrating site layout, grading, erosion control, structural elements and a stormwater lift station to effectively manage runoff. Effective coordination with stakeholders and value engineering helped reduce disruptions, utility relocations and costs.

Overcoming challenges such as existing utilities, bedrock, and overhead power lines, the project utilized precast concrete boxes and poured-in place for precision and efficiency. Now recently opened, the tunnel promotes safer, alternative transportation options and supports Bentonville’s vision of a sustainable, connected and livable community.
