Copper Breaks State Park

SIZE:

1,898.8 acres

Client:

Texas Parks And Wildlife Department (TPWD)

Project completed in 1975.

Copper Breaks State Park is a beautiful and rugged terrain located in Quanah, Texas, offering a number of outdoor activities including camping, hiking, fishing and stargazing.

This project in West Texas was done for Texas Parks And Wildlife Department (TPWD) and included civil engineering for all the park facilities, water well, water distribution and roads, as well as design and supervision of the construction of a small dam to form a small lake.

The dam is earth-filled and the spillway is designed to handle up to a 500-year flood event. The seams of gypsum under the site made it necessary to construct a deep cutoff trench under the dam site to intercept the gypsum layers, which can be seen in the outfall channel. The dam and spillway is still standing and continues to protect the park from flooding, even 50 years later.
